Having a website is much like having a high-street store…..on a VERY busy street. You design your store, you fill it with stock, and then you ask yourself ‘how do I get customers in here?’! Of course in the real world, you more than likely wouldn’t open your store close to a competitor, but online of course you are up against a wealth of competition.
Whilst in the real world, a few well-placed sign-posts might get people into the store, online you are going to have to think a little more out-of-the-box!

Going back to our real-world analogy, would you want all your customers coming into your store from a single sign-post, or from a single advert in a newspaper? Of course you wouldn’t… you would want DIVERSE traffic from a variety of sources, such as word-of-mouth, repeat custom, and passing trade. Keep that word in your mind….’DIVERSE’. Now think about your website; where does it’s traffic come from. Does it come from one source…. or from lots of sources? What keywords are people using to visit your site? What pages do they view? How long do they stay on those pages? What other websites send you visitors?
If you don’t know the answer to the above, it is likely you are not watching your website performance. Back in the real world, you could stand in your own store, and watch how people behave….what products they look at, where they walk, and how long they stay….. but online things are not quite so simple.
So when thinking about how to get people to your site think about two things…. think about DIVERSITY, and think about behaviour.
